Data Overload in the Military
With the U.S. military having always being considered the ultimate hub for the development of innovative technologies around the world, one can only image the sorting and filtering through data and information that occurs on the ground and in various bases around the world to catch relevant intel. Researchers and military officials are finding out that this overload of information is making it increasingly difficult for operators of surveillance systems and drone attacks to not only concentrate on the correct targets, but to avoid civilian casualties for the people living in the middle east. This has led to the military also being a leader in learning about the psychological effects of such intense variation in focus for soldiers.
While the development of technology and data systems continue to exponentially blossom in the public sector, especially in the military, researchers are trying to find the best ways to combat against human overconsumption of technology. I do feel, however, that in the long run, humans will continue to adapt to the nuances of technology, as we have no other choice. It is a patient transition, but it is obvious to see that our generation is much more tech savvy, and therefore, much more able to efficiently multi-task. Nonetheless, the overload of data for military personnel is an issue that has just began causing problems for missions overseas and in protecting the people in the regions where the military is actively fighting extremism. It is essential that we continue to work at making military information technology more efficient for military operators and make it the highest priority for officials to keep up with changing technology to have the resources and knowledge to share with the next generations of soldiers.
